This page lets you configure the update checker.

The update checker can run in the background automatically, or can be triggered manually via Help > Check For Program Updates from the main window.

The layout of the Preferences page differs slightly depending on version.

Directory Opus 13.16.5 and below:

  • Check for news and program updates: This option enables the update checker. You can choose either a daily, weekly or monthly schedule to check for updates.
  • Automatically download new program updates: If new updates are found, Opus will automatically download them for you. Updates will never be installed automatically, but the files will be downloaded ready for you to install when you're ready.
  • Automatically install when Opus is inactive: After an update is downloaded, Opus will launch the installer automatically when idle (e.g. no file copies are ongoing) instead of notifying you that the update is ready to install.
  • Check for new beta releases: By default the update checker only identifies official releases, but you can turn this on to be notified of new Beta releases as well. Note that if the installed version is a beta, Opus will always check for newer beta versions.
  • Check for and install updated Program Certificates: When doing the update check, Opus can also check for new program certificates and install them automatically.
  • Install updates silently from the update checker: Streamlines update installation when done via the update checker. A UAC prompt may still be required to install each update, but you won't normally need to see or click on the installer beyond that.
  • Perform automatic update check silently: If this option is turned on, Opus will check in the background and only notify you if an update is available. If you turn this off, the update checker window will pop-up whenever an automatic update check begins. If this option is on and Automatically download is also enabled, you won't be notified until the update has been downloaded and is ready to be installed.
  • Only show a status bar icon when new updates are found: If this option is turned on as well, the update checker window will never open automatically. If an update is found, you will be notified with an icon in the Lister status bar instead of via a pop-up window.

Directory Opus 13.16.6 and above:

Automatic updates

  • Check for news and program updates: When on, Opus will automatically look for updates on a schedule. When off, you can still trigger checks manually via Help > Check for Program updates.
  • Check frequency: Choose from a daily, weekly or monthly check for updates.
  • Notification style:
    • Open updater before checking: The update checker dialog will appear before Opus connects to the update server, whether or not an update is then found. Can be useful if you need to know when Opus is connecting to the internet.
    • Open updater if update found: Update check happens in the background. When an update is ready to download or install, the update checker dialog will appear to tell you.
    • Status bar icon if update found: Update check happens in the background. When an update is ready, an icon will be added to the Lister status bar to tell you.
  • Automatically download new program updates: When an update is found, Opus will download it for you. You can still choose when to install it, but won't have to wait for the download.
  • Automatically install when Opus is inactive: After an update is downloaded, Opus will launch the installer automatically when idle (e.g. no file copies are ongoing). A UAC prompt may still be required.

Beta updates

  • Check for new beta releases: Tells the update checker to find beta updates as well as stable ones.

If a beta is already installed, Opus will always check for newer betas until a stable version is installed. New changes are often available first in beta versions to allow them to be tested before inclusion in stable releases. Betas are not always fully translated and may be unstable as they are still being tested.

Options

  • Install updates with minimal interaction: Streamlines update installation when done via the update checker. A UAC prompt may still be required to install each update, but you won't normally need to see or click on the installer beyond that.
  • Check for and install updated Program Certificates: When doing the update check, Opus can also check for new program certificates and install them automatically. This saves you having to install a new certificate manually after actions such as adding more licences or purchasing an add-on.
